While technology is also spear heading our way into a highly productive future with advancements in AI, IoT, BlockChain etc., as entrepreneurs, CIOs and technology users, we need to be updated and aware.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 technology trends of 2018 which will transform our world and the way we live in it :

1. AI – More of it !

AI has the ability to enable decision making, reinvent business models and ecosystems and enhance customer experience immensely. According to a recent survey by Gartner, 59% organisations are gathering information to build their AI strategy and programs. However, the AI techniques are rapidly changing and organisations have to be geared up to tap its full potential.

Gartner is estimating that by the end of the year 2020, 30% of CIOs will include AI among the top 5 technology investment priority. Using AI correctly will be one of the biggest metrics to justify a CIO’s role and contribution to company growth.

2. Video technology

With marketers increasingly relying on video content for higher impact, its an advantage to find better tools and technologies that can help in creating high resolution videos with advanced editing features and create lightweight videos for faster buffering and downloads. Those are the key criteria to get things  to become viral.

3. Intelligent Things

In present times, we get to see many intelligent things extensively using AI and machine learning to interact more intelligently with the people and their surroundings. Most intelligent things exist because of AI whereas others are existing things which incorporate AI to make it smart. For example- Smart camera or vacuum cleaner robots or Li-Fi technology – Your LED light bulbs becoming wi-fi transmitters. How cool is  that ?!

4. Assisted reality and virtual reality (AR/VR)

The gaming industry may have set its eyes earlier than most onto this amazing piece of technology but there are more industries taking notice and there bound to be some action happening in the coming 5 years for this. AR/VR will help in education tech, Medicine (rehabilitation and treatments etc)

5. The Rise Of AI-Powered Chatbots In Customer Service And Support

A note on technology trends can not be complete without mentioning this stealthy star. Chatbots will make consumer experiences with customer support and sales much delightful and mainstream. With chatbots today being highly capable of holding a basic to medium level conversation, one can be productive 24 hours of the day and replace the human inconsistency and language barriers.

6. Conversational Platforms

I recently saw a 2.5 year old ask Amazon’s Alexa to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little star” and it was played. Being a techie I know that Alexa internally turned the request into a query code and searched the internet to dig out the most popular high ranking search result. But imagine a 2.5 year old was able to conversationally code without knowing it.

The point is conversational platforms has begun revolutionising how we interact with computers and code of teh future will be simpler and probably just a bunch of coders sitting and talking to machines.

This is in its nascent stages and therefore there’s a challenge users face with conversational platforms. is that it requires very structured communication from the user to process the task eg Alexa responds to “Alexa STOP” but not to “Alexa close” or “Alexa shut down”

7. Immersive Experience

Mixed Reality (MR) which merges and experiences both Virtual Reality(VR) and Augmented Reality(AR) has brought out a big change in the way people perceive and interact with the digital world. In fact, it has been instrumental in dissolving the boundaries between digital and physical world. It has become the immersive experience of choice for customers.

8. BlockChain

The Blockchain is a shared, distributed, de-centralized and a tokenized ledger that allows untrusted business partners to have commercial transactions. The major drawback of blockchain is that it is largely unregulated however, it has immense potential in terms of financial opportunities.

9. Stringent Data protection laws

With great power comes great responsibility. Spiderman may have said this first but the authorities are sure to say it everyday. With Amazon knowing your address, phone number, credit card details, spending habits, location, Facebook knowing your entire friend circle, family and home etc imagine all this data getting hacked and into the hands of dregs of society. Having big corporations to responsible about your data is of immense importance.

Remember how Uber had 57 million records hacked last year ?!? Isn’t that worrisome ?

So basically companies need to focus on keeping their data safe. Newer entrepreneurs entering data security as a business will be highly sought after.

10. Digital Currencies:

Okay this is not “dismissable” anymore. Bitcoin and Crypto are going to be around for a while and as much as you’d like to think they are just a fad , 2018 is going to see tremendous action on this front.

Ethereum, Litecoin, Monero, Dash, and Ripple have also joined Bitcoin’s party and the world is waking up to this growing rise in value. Today 1 Bitcoin = $16000 approximately . Not kidding !
